GeoWoodstock IV

May 26-29th

UPDATE 6/1/06

The June issue of Today's Cacher will be out this Saturday, the 3rd.

Check back then for new articles about caching in Hawaii, more "Caching for Quads" and, of course, GeoWoodstock IV!

Until then feel free to explore our FORUMS--in addition to forums, we are also offering blogs, photo galleries and podcast hosting. We think you'll agree it was worth the wait!

We recently ‘spoke’ with Will Nienke a.k.a. 9key about the upcoming mega-caching event, GeoWoodstock IV.

When is GeoWoodstock IV?

GeoWoodstock IV takes place over Memorial Day weekend. The main event is Saturday the 27th, but there are sub-events Friday, Sunday, and Monday.

Where will it be held?

The event is being held at Cedar Hill State Park, which is along the shores of Joe Pool Lake in southwest Dallas County, Texas.

How is GeoWoodstock IV going to be different from previous GeoWoodstock events?

This year’s event follows the tried and true formula that has made the first three GeoWoodstock events successful – friendly, relaxed, and free. What is different? The location, which has its own flavor of caching, as well as allowing some cachers to attend that live closer than previous GeoWoodstocks.

How many people does it take to pull off a GeoWoodstock?

The organizing committee consists of 14 cachers, most of whom live in the Dallas – Fort Worth area. We expect to have 30 or more volunteers helping with registration, the store, food, cache runs, maintenance, and other necessary tasks.

What is the planned itinerary for each day?

The schedule of events can be found at http://tinyurl.com/q2hzb

What will you be providing on-site? What should each cacher make sure not to forget to bring? (Water, suntan lotion, etc.)

Dinner will be provided on Saturday at 5:30 and bottled water will be available from Friday until Sunday. There will be two large tents (20 x 40) with tables and chairs set up at the pavilion from Friday to Sunday. Late spring in North Texas is generally humid and warm in the mid- to upper 80s during the day. Shorts and t-shirts are recommended for hanging out at the pavilion or your campsite, but jeans should be worn when caching. Drink plenty of water, wear sunscreen, and be prepared for poison ivy.

How will Travel bug trading be managed?

Snoogans has a rather detailed post in the forums which does a good job of explaining this: http://forums.groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showtopic=109811

Will there be coin trading ?

Yes, coin trading will be a sub-event. More details will be available soon.

Will there be internet access at the site? Are there places in town with free wi-fi?

We’ve tried to get WiFi access at the park but it proved to be cost prohibitive. There are Starbucks locations in Cedar Hill and nearby in Arlington. Here are two links for WiFi points:

http://www.jiwire.com/search-wifi-hotspots.htm?address=&city=arlington&state=tx&zip=&country_id=1

Will there be any group caching opportunities?

Yes, several cache runs are planned for Sunday. Information about this can be found at this website: http://tinyurl.com/q2hzb

Are there any kid’s events planned?

The park is hosting kids-related events each day, Saturday through Monday, and will have some fun stuff at the pavilion as well.

What else will there be for non-caching family members?

There is a sandy beach next to the pavilion, fishing is free in the park, and you can rent boats, jet skis, and fishing equipment at the nearby marina. There is a large shopping mall about eight miles from the park in Arlington and several shopping areas in Cedar Hill. The JFK Museum and Memorial in downtown Dallas is 15 miles away, and the Fort Worth Stockyards are 20 miles northwest. Downtown Fort Worth is a fun place for dinner and shopping as well.

What's for lunch?

Dinner will be served at 5:30 P.M. at the pavilion by Dickey’s BBQ. They’re been cooking great BBQ in Dallas since 1941 and catered last year’s Texas Challenge event. There will be brisket and chicken, beans, potato salad, peach cobbler, iced tea and water.

Will there be any medical services?

A real, live, medical doctor will be on hand in addition to several nurses and a couple of search and rescue professionals.

Where can one buy shirts, coins, etc?

There will be a store at the pavilion where you will be able to purchase GW4 coins, shirts, magnets, wooden nickels, and other logo stuff. Texas coins and TXGA logo shirts will also be on hand. Geocaching.com will also have a store. We accept, cash, checks, and credit cards.

Any surprises planned?

Sure! But they wouldn’t be surprises if I told you! ;-)

Will any groundspeak representatives be coming?

Nate Irish (Jeremy’s brother) will be attending and he is bringing one other Groundspeak employee.

Any advice for last minute travelers?

Book your campsite ASAP! Very few spots remain.
