The Mission

By Bill Herbert, aka Wild Woodsmen

He treds slowly down the path, enveloped in the deep green of the Cascade Woods. Occasionally a boulder of granite breaks out of the forest, at times so sudden it startles him. His steely eyes serach intently as he progresses along the narrow path, leading deeper into the surrounding trees.

He began his journey just after the sun appeared on the Eastern horizon, soon to be shrouded in clouds and morning fog. Light rain fell, bringing a chill to the morning air. Morning progressed, the fog burned away, the clouds flew past and the sun again began to warm his advance. He stops, listens, looks around, as if he fears someone is watching. Perceiving no sense of warning or discovery, his feet continue the steady pace towards his ever-nearing objective.

Warming air envelopes him, though the umbrella of tall Douglas Fir keeps direct light off his contemplative face; a face that shows the marks of many years of experience. Suddenly, his well conditioned body abruptly stops. Again he listens for sounds around him, checking all points of the compass to see if anyone else approaches. Content it is safe, he drifts off the trail, and proceeds into the thick canopy of ferns and underbrush, looking for a sign. He is well aware that his technical skills are important now, but his observation will be the key to completing the task. There! Between the rock and the base of the tree, a sign. His steely eyes spark, as he approaches the mound of dense moss. Hurridly, he extracts a metal box from beneath the moss, glancing again in all directions. Withdrawing something white, he takes pen in hand and inscribes a secret message on the small tablet. Cautiously, he again places the box precisely where he found it, re-covers it. Standing now, he checks the area a last time, and is sure he has accomplished his mission without discovery by those who would foil the operation.

With a light heart and quick feet, he retraces his steps back down the mountain to his vehicle. There, he records something in a folder, closes it, and drives back to his home base with a sense of pride and accomplishment.

He is Wild Woodsmen, and has again beaten the odds, discovered another geocache and is on his way to report the discovery to central command!
