CITO Event

Alamance County, NC

By Jerry Carter, aka El Diablo
Alamance County, NC CITO Event

It was a windy day in the Piedmont area with temps in the low 60’s, a perfect day to CITO. People from different areas of North Carolina assembled in this remote park to do something special for a community that most didn’t live in, or had ever visited before. Old and young joined forces to pick up trash that had apparently been there for years. In about an hour’s time some 40 to 50 cachers picked up what was estimated to be a couple of tons of trash. The picture above is of a old scoreboard that was dug out of the woods. We knocked the dirt and mud off and turned it into a log book that all the participants signed with chalk.

Lost Cacher?

There were some interesting items found, such as this backbone pictured above found by WE4NCS . A lost cacher?

There were also some useful items found. One mans trash is another mans treasure?

Just how far do you think you would go on those?

That’s me talking to rldill the host of the event about his recently found spare tires for his car. He swears these have at least 100,000 more good miles left on them. You can tell from my expression that I’m kind of doubtful.

Just how far do you think you would go on those?

Teamwork was at its best during the event. The kids pictured above are a fine example of up and coming cachers. I even got to hug their mom, CurmudgeonlyGal! See picture below.

Of course I had to bribe her with a free hiking staff for the pleasure.

My wife took a lot of these pictures. Wimseyguy caught her trying to take a picture of his butt? I’m going to have to keep an eye on those two.

Below is another example of the fine youth that participated in the event. Someone needs to get them a GPS’r, they don’t seem to know which way is out.

This way! No, this way!

The best part of the entire event was the appreciation that we received from the Alamance County Park Service. They had actually asked why there were no caches in their parks! It was a great pleasure to finally meet some land managers that actually want cachers. This is one county that is now convinced that they need more cachers!

Congratulations to Roger (rldill) for all of his hard work on educating a county about geocachers. Also a special thanks to Wimseyguy for all of the effort he has put in with the NC State and County parks trying to convince them that we are indeed good people. Without his efforts this event probably wouldn’t have happened.

Roger:

On behalf of the Alamance County Recreation and Parks Department I would like to take this opportunity to thank you and the geocachers who came out to the Pleasant Grove Recreation Center on Saturday, April 16th. Your group did a wonderful job cleaning up the grounds at the center! Their efforts are much appreciated by our staff! We are pleased to be able to host events such as yours at our facilities. Our department is always on the lookout for programs like geocaching that appeal to people regardless of whether they are male or female, old or young, or their income level. These type of programs are difficult to find. So we are very excited about the potential for our involvement with geocaching here in Alamance County. We look forward to working with all of you.
