Some of the Numerous
March Events

This month there are lots of exciting events all over the world; read about a couple of them here, and then check out the geocaching.com event calendar to see what else is out there. This month Today's Cacher is looking at events around the USA and around the World.

A mixed bag of CITO Events, Trainings, Geo-games,
and Some Old-Fashioned Get-togethers

Saturday, March 05, 2005 - Oak Mtn Spring Cleaning - Alabama

Spring Cleaning at Alabama's largest state park.

The event will run 8 a.m. to noon -- possibly later if there is a need and people are willing. We'll meet at the gravel parking lot near the listed coordinates which is also near the Reel 'Em In cache.

The fee to enter the park that day will be waived for all who participate in the clean-up. Just be sure to tell the gatekeepers that you are there for the Alabama Geocacher's clean-up event. Also all participants will need to fill out a volunteer form for the park. You will need to bring that with you on the day of the event or you can fill one out when you arrive.

Sunday, March 06, 2005 - Geo 101 - Minnesota

This program will be held Sunday, March 6th, 12 p.m. - 5 p.m. at the Target Stage on Harriet Island. For those who haven't been here, it's a beautiful park, with trail connections, river walk, rock garden, public dock and playground. Currently there are 10 caches in the park and surrounding area.

The program is scheduled to start at the Target Stage at 12 p.m. We will have sample caches, contents, log books, etc. and whatever else we want to display. After the session, we will break up into small groups to learn about using a GPSr for geocaching, locating caches, and other related questions. Copies of the nearby area cache pages will be available to obtain waypoints. This session is scheduled to be finished by 5 p.m., but individual scheduling is flexible.

Mark your calendar for March 6th and plan on attending. We will need extra GPSrs (and different brands) for those who don't own one so we can provide hands-on experience as necessary. If you know anyone who has an interest in learning about geocaching or received a GPSr over Christmas, be sure to tell them about this event.

Saturday, March 12, 2005 - Hide-and-Go-Cache Bash - British Columbia

This is a get-together for us to tell tales of the trail, a few weeks after our First Annual Vancouver Island Hide-and-Go-Cache day. The location of the event on March 12th will be familiar to those who attended the last Cacher's Haven.

By the time we get together at 7 p.m. on March 12th, we should have lots of stories to swap about our hiding and seeking. We'll also recognize those who hid particularly memorable caches with some prizes.

Everyone is welcome! If you are planning to attend please post a note so we can get an idea of numbers. If you have a prize item you'd like to donate we'll gratefully throw it into the mix.

Saturday, March 12, 2005 - The Rainy Day Event - Norway

On this event, we hope for a rainy day, because the event will go on indoors. We'll meet, eat, share experiences, use gadgets, surf the net, have movies for the kids, etc. Please post a note to tell if you are coming! There are many nearby caches to find before the event starts.

Sunday, March 13, 2005 - "The Gambler" TC 2005 GeoPoker Run - Texas

How about a little game of GeoPoker? Don’t know how to play Poker you say? You’re our boy! LOL!

We’re planning a little Poker Run Sunday, March 13th 2005 after the Texas Challenge 2005 in Cedar Hill State Park. Here’s how it goes. On the grounds of Cedar Hill State Park will be 5 hidden containers with at least 20 cards in each one (2 decks will be used). Once you find one of the containers, you can take only 1 card from it at that time. After finding all 5 containers you should have only 5 cards in your possession. At any time you can go back to any or all of the containers and trade one card per visit (if there are cards left). You do not have to find all 5 containers before going back to trade at a previous container. At no time should you have more than 5 cards in your possession. This is a timed event and any hand that is not back at the starting point by 11:00 a.m. will be disqualified! No trading of cards with other players is permitted. You do not necessarily have to have 5 cards to win. A "Flush" will not count as a winning hand! There are no wild cards. In case of a tie, a cut for high card will determine the winner.

Due to the limited number of cards, the participants will be limited to the first 20 individuals or teams that sign in at the designated starting area. A team or couple must hunt together and cannot split up to find multiple containers. To participate, be at the starting area at least 15 minutes before the 9:30 starting time to sign in and receive the coordinates to the 5 containers. There is no entry fee and I hope to have a prize to give away to the lucky winner!

Tuesday, March 15, 2005 - Kiss Me, I'm Irish Geocachers Meet & Greet - New York

Saturday, March 19, 2005 - The Devil's Easter Geo Hunt & BBQ - Tasmania

Come join us on the weekend before Easter for an afternoon Barbeque & Geo Easter Egg hunt, in a beautiful hidden Gem of a Forest Reserve approximately 25kms south of Burnie. The area covers just a few hectares, but has BBQ's, Toilets, lots of tables, a lovely flat 30mins walk around in the scrub & a small lagoon, which by chance we sat beside for over an hour watching a Platypus feeding & lazing around within a couple of metres of us.

Thursday, March 24, 2005 - Greater Fresno Area Geocacher's Get-Together IV - California

Thursday, 24 March 2005, 6:00pm (18:00hrs). On the Northeast corner of Blackstone & Herndon in north Fresno.

It's about that time again. Time for another get-together. Yes, it really has been nearly nine months since the 'Greater Fresno Area Geocacher's Get-Together Again III'? So many new names ... and very few faces. Lets change that. We've all seen the old names, and we keep seeing new ones all the time. All the people with the strange names playing the game. Who are all of these people, and why did their parents punish them by giving them such strange names in the first place? Let's find out about the names and put some faces with them by having a get together on...Thursday, 24 March 2005, 6:00 p.m.

There's not really anything planned for the event itself, other that seeing old friends and meeting new ones, but while we're there, we can:

Be sure to bring any Travel Bugs you may have to swap. Everyone is Welcome! Hope to see you there!
