Have you noticed cachers around you that are obsessed with numbers? They not only worry about their own number count, but about everyone else's. They accuse people of cheating, or maybe they even pad their own numbers. My question is ... who is cheating who?
If you are in this game/hobby/sport to rack up numbers, or care about some else's numbers, then maybe you have missed the point. This is about personal satisfaction, reaching certain goals set for your self. It isn't about your numbers or anyone else's. It's about going places you may never have gone before, getting out of the house, or spending time with family or loved ones. It's about the joy of finding a cache that very few people even know exists, that special feeling you get every time you sit down and write in the log book. It's about attending a event cache and meeting new people and saying hello to old friends and swapping tales of great hunts, and listening to someone talk about finding a cache that you hid, and hearing about the joy they got from the hunt.
I love to cache hunt with my wife Kathie. I enjoy walking the trails with her and experiencing nature firsthand. To hear the birds and to glimpse occasional wildlife is a fulfilling moment. To see the excitement on her face when she finds a cache is a satisfying sight that is hard to compare. We don't have the greatest numbers, but we have a great time.
We don't have the numbers, but then again ... who cares?
