You won’t find Little Haystack in any of the guidebooks on the multitude of mountains you can climb while visiting the Adirondacks. It’s out of the way, largely trail-less, and only about 2100 feet tall; but it’s a heck of a mountain in my book. From the top of Little Haystack you won’t see a house or road or boat or powerline, but I heard a loon calling from Lake Kushaqua, far below me. It’s a short, steep climb, requiring your arms almost as much as your legs to reach the summit, a great view of unspoiled woods and waters as far as you can see in every direction, and a perfect swimming spot awaits you after the bushwhack/controlled fall down to the dirt road that you park on.
