A Mother's Dilemma

Muggles versus Sneaky Ninjas

By Jennifer Reeves, aka auravixen

Muggles...I'd only heard of them in Harry Potter. At least, that is, until I ran into the wonderful world of geocaching. Now I see people in a different light. Is he a muggle? She has to be a muggle! Is that a cell phone or a GPS?

I have a four year old daughter who enjoys the hikes and finding what she calls 'Treasure'. I let her trade the items and she has fun choosing her treasure from the many among the cache.

Today, we've ventured out to a pond popular for fishing to find a cache. I've never been back to these trails before, but it's fun. I follow the GPS to a location near the pond and find a father and his two young sons fishing. "What are you doing?" my daughter yells to the boys. "Fishing. What are you doing?" they yell back. "Finding treasure!" she proudly exclaims. I blink and laugh. "Yes yes, leaves are a beautiful treasure! Lets go find some others this way!" I say as I usher her off to another section.

I'm not an old pro at caching. Nowhere near it. So, I tend to get paranoid when a 'muggle' is nearby and my daughter starts yelling about the treasure. What if the muggles come to see what the treasure is? They might simply take the cache, and then it's my fault.

I try to be like a sneaky ninja. "Now honey.. we can't tell just anyone about the treasure," I say, trying to make her feel like a sneaky ninja, too. When we get back within earshot of the family, she talks very loudly, "Are we close to the treasure, Mommy?" I wince. I remind her of what I'd said, and she informs me she didn't tell them. She was talking to me. Hm. A four year old with attitude. Gotta love children.

I settled for leaving the cache for a day when no fishermen are around. I'm paranoid, and my daughter is loud. Not a good combination when looking for a hidden cache. Not a good one at all.
