AOL Tins Make Good Cache Containers

Don't toss them out! By Will Nienke
aka 9Key

I'm sure all of us have opened our mailboxes to find a hand-sized metal tin from America Online boasting a billion free hours of Internet access. Don't throw them away! These thin metal tins make very good cache containers. The following is a simple tutorial on how to transform the advertising mailer into a camouflaged geocache.

An AOL tin

Things You'll Need:

Preparation

Lightly sand the container - both parts. Sanding helps the paint adhere to the tin. I use a sanding "sponge". They last forever and are easy to clean for the next use.

Carefully(!), and lightly, bend the sides of the bottom part of the tin. The bottom is the part without ridges. Carefully bend "in" the cover's sides. This helps keep the cover from falling off. Test the fit and adjust as neccesary.

Magnets

If you plan to attach magnets to this container, now is the time. They will not ahere very well once the tin is painted. Hot glue won't last in the outdoors, nor will traditional double sided tape.

Painting

You're almost ready to paint! I use three basic colors: Black, Grey, or Rust. Paint your container to match it surroundings and protect it from being Muggled. Buy inexpensive "flat" spray paint. Gloss just won't do! Cover your painting area with a drop cloth or towel. Place the two sides of the tin on a support of some kind. I use the caps from spray cans. This gets the tin off the ground and makes it easier to paint the sides.

Painting Tips

Alternate Painting Option

Textured spray paint is a good option for the AOL tin container. Apply the textured paint as your first coat then use use a traditional flat color as the second coat.

Finishing

These containers are not waterproof! You'll have to place the logbook in a good quality freezer bag or you'll have a soggy mess in no time. Mini logbooks work best, along with a mini-pen or shortened pencil. Placing this type of container in a spot where it is out of direct contact with the elements will help it last longer. Enjoy!
