When geocachers around the world plan their events, what can you expect to find? This partial list of excerpts from March event cache pages is enlightening. It seems geocachers are diverse in their interests.
Camping in the Australian outback, cruising the streets of Las Vegas, instructing the finer points of geocaching, competition, and Canadian cache machine events are just a few on the event calendar for March.
You can find a complete list of coming events here: http://www.geocaching.com/about/calendar.asp
What's there? Civilization wise, not a lot. A couple of self composting toilets, and that's it. Camping wise, a large grassy camping area along the banks of the Crooked River- beautiful! What'll we do? Whatever you like. There are plenty of 4WD tracks to explore for the adventurous, there are a number of existing caches in the area, or just drop a line in the river and see what's biting- it's up to you.
What to bring: Everything you'll need to be comfortable for a weekend in the bush.
Do you Southern California geocachers have any idea how many caches are just sittin' out there in Las Vegas waiting for us? More than enough to make a weekend out of it for sure. So, I'm going caching in Las Vegas, baby! Anyone want to join me?

Here come the Raisins! Once again a group of West Coast Geocachers are headed our way. They will be holding an event cache called LAS VEGAS HERE WE COME So here is our own event cache to welcome them. Let’s gather to meet, greet, and eat.
If you are new to geocaching, or just want to help get the word out, please attend this clinic. Topics covered:

A One-day event cache on last piece of private property in Rock Castle Gorge, (Floyd, VA,) at a historical home commonly called "The White House."
The Cache is named after my grandfather's nickname for the house which he always called the Bear's Den, even though in 50 years none of us have ever seen a bear in this gorge!
Rock Castle Gorge trail is no easy hike if you do the entire length, but you will rewarded with fantastic views, great wildlife, and the best example of the Appalachias possible in a single day. Going from campsite to house is a moderate flat walk with some elevation changes and footbridges. Beautiful views & excellent creek wading, (I've explored 3 miles both up & down stream,) are more than enough reward for getting out into the great outdoors!
Cellphones do not work here so it is suggested you travel with someone and not by yourself. Campsites available in Gorge by free permit,(see hike description.)
"Vancouver is the largest city in the province of British Columbia and the third largest city in Canada. It's surrounded by water on three sides and is nestled alongside the Coast Mountain Range. Vancouver is home to spectacular natural scenery and a bustling metropolitan core, and boasts one of the mildest climates in Canada."
The City of Vancouver and the surrounding area supports a wide range of destination sites- more than 200 parks, and for our event, more than 60 caches.
Hallo Geocacher
Geocachers around the world are preparing to “clean up their act.” The 2nd annual international Cache-In-Trash-Out, (CITO,) day is scheduled April 17.
...the CITO program is designed to increase the public awareness of geocaching. With support from local business and organizations, Groundspeak, Inc., the parent company of geocaching.com, will utilize the volunteer efforts of the geocaching community to clean up the parks and other cache-friendly places throughout the world. In 2003, geocachers around the world organized 67 cleanup events in 5 countries and 28 States. Aside from the obvious goal of grooming parks and wooded areas, the CITO program is designed to increase the public awareness of geocaching.
Geocachers are continually encouraged to participate in CITO by attending the many events already scheduled, or to organize an event in their local area. For a calendar of scheduled events, or suggestions for planning events, visit www.cacheintrashout.org.
Watch for many more CITO stories in next month’s Today’s Cacher.
