This month:
- Rescue A TB for 9/11
- Yellow Jeep Travel Bugs! by Sean W., aka GeoWorms
aka Doc-Dean
One of the most interesting TB’s I’ve seen so far, Rescue, is owned by WhereRWee? and was released in Only the Shadow Knows in Arizona on April 6th, 2002. Rescue’s goal is to travel this great country of ours and collect donations for the families of the courageous rescue personnel who lost their lives on that terrible day, 09/11/01. He started out carrying 50 self addressed and stamped envelopes to The New York Police & Fire Widows’ & Children’s Benefit Fund. Currently, only 17 are left.
The envelopes have even survived an increase in postal rates as MrHaywire & Co was kind enough to add the extra three cents stamps to every envelope. To date, Rescue has traveled 4144 miles visiting many states in the Midwest and all over Florida.
The cache is a Rubbermaid container with Rescue (a Dalmatian), the envelopes, two toy fire trucks, a Tempe Police patch, and 15 assorted buttons from firefighters' uniforms. A notepad has also been added to this cache for people to write down their thoughts and stories as this TB makes his journey.
Yuzawa Kat has hosted Rescue twice and has felt a special bond with the TB, stating in the logbook that her brother is a firefighter in Hawaii. She has brought him to several events and encouraged others to donate to this worthy cause.
I acquired Rescue from Kat at one of these events. After hearing his story, I just knew he was meant to come home with me. I am very honored to be entrusted with probably the most important travel bug I have ever handled!! I lost one of my best friends, Anthony Perez, on 9/11/01. Anthony worked for E-Speed, a division of Cantor Fitzgerald. He worked in Tower One. He was one of the many souls trapped after the first plane hit and never had the opportunity to try and escape. He and all his co-workers died waiting for help that would not reach them in time. And, many of those rescuers died trying their hardest to reach them. Here is a link to Anthony's memorial. Anthony loved gadgets and technology, and, in retrospect, I know he would have been a geocacher.
