State-wide Goal
Mountain_Wanderer's long standing goal has finally been accomplished: to log every available cache in the state of New Hampshire.
Systematically, Mountain_Wanderer has been traveling to every corner, town, and city of the Granite State (over 500 caches altogether), hammering away at his goal. After more than two years, grabbing new ones as well as the old, MW had narrowed down his goal to 23 caches at the beginning of the summer of 2004. He then shared his goal with a small group of geocachers with whom he became friendly, Bushwhack Bob, g-o-cachers, and ThePetersPack. MW thought he would accomplish this incredible task by the end of the summer.
Our group began monitoring MW's progress. Every new cache that was posted resulted in a plan for him to get that cache as well as any other old cache close by. By August, MW had his number down to 18 but said, "I don't think I will be able to make my goal by September's Geo-meet because the caches remaining are mostly long hikes."
Our group pulled out our maps and began plotting a strategy. We got out our boats, canoes, kayaks and hiking poles. Most of the difficult caches remaining surrounded the White Mountains.
There were constant emails to MW with possible dates to get these last few. Arrangements were made for overnight stays at friends' summer homes. After a few weeks, MW's number was down to eight! We were all amazed at MW's determination. Just a few weeks before the target date, the Stratham Geo-meet on September 26th, MW had the number down to TWO! One cache was a multi in Durham which he had attempted twice with "no finds." However, after analyzing his calculations, MW figured where he went wrong and was confident he could get this elusive cache on his next try. The only other cache remaining was the infamous Owl's
Head, a 4,000-foot mountain with a nine-mile hike (each way). A
date was set and three of us planned the long hike to Owl's Head for Sunday, September 9. During the days leading up to that date, the weather forecast showed a possibility of thundershowers in the area. By Friday, the forecast changed to show a perfect day. After a ten-hour hike, MW's count was down to ONE!
MW was able to get the last cache in Durham and found every new cache that came up during the weeks leading to the Geo-meet.
On September 26th, MW went to the Geo-Meet in Stratham, NH and logged this:
September 26 by Mountain_Wanderer (1493 found)
A great day for this event. Nice to see old friends and meet new ones. This again completes my NH finds and as of this moment there are still no caches in NH which I have not found. I don't expect that to last, but it is nice right now. So it's off to MA, RI, VT etc... Traded 11 TB's today. Thanks for all the work putting this together.
Congratulations go out to the Mountain_Wanderer for achieving this extraordinary goal!
