aka Brogan
In early 1971 Brock Yates attempted to assemble a troupe of racers to compete in a timed coast to coast race on the open highways of the U.S. On April 1st, 1971 Yates was the only one who showed up at the Red Ball Garage on East 31st Street in Manhatten. However racing with no competitors he finishes the race with his associates and 15 year old son.
Just after midnight on November 15th, 1971 starting once again from the Red Ball Garage in NYC, six souped up vehicles screamed onto the streets of the city and headed west. The winner being Yates and companion Dan Gurney of Santa Anna, CA. taking a mere 35 hrs and 54 mins to cover over 2863 miles from NYC to Redondo Beach, CA.
From here emerged the idea for the Annual CannonBall Run TB Race! A total of 74 Travelbugs races across the country in 2003. While Oscar's Express took an early lead, it appears that slow and steady does indeed win the race. Tilly and Toby Tortoise tied for first place.

The 2nd Annual CannonBall Run TravelBug Race is set to begin with a secret release between the dates of March25th and April 15th, 2004.
This years race is being hosted by New York Geocaching Organization (NYGO). Rules for the race are fairly simple. Geocachers are instructed to attach a new unused (no previous miles on it) TravelBug tag to any ground based, motorized wheeled vehicle and send it along with a $5.00 entry fee to:
NYGOThe entrants must have been received at the above address no later than March 15th, 2004, so unfortunately the race is closed for this year. But don't worry! the 3rd Annual CannonBall Run will be taking place in 2005! As NYGO is a non for profit organization the entry fee is used to cover the costs for a special limited edition CannonBall Run Tag to be added to each racer, and for the costs incured by NYGO in organizing this race. Leftover funds will be used to supply awards and trophys for the winners. Several companies have expressed an interest in donating a prize for certain catagories such as the bug handled by the most unique cachers or the bug making the trip in the shortest distance, NYGO is currently in discussions with these companies in an attempt to have these prizes avalible for the 2004 race. The entrants must have been received at the above address no later than March 15th, 2004, so unfortunately the race is closed for this year.

78 TravelBugs answered the call for the 2004 race, of special interest is the return of defending Champion Team Geo-Dillo with their entry Vee-Dub the Tortoise Bug, seems they are out to prove that nothing beats a Tortoise when it comes to cross country racing. This years race has even drawn the attention of our European friends, with the TB Viking from Sweden being entered by Anders Granfelt from Vintrosa, Sweden. Other entries of note are the Oscar Meyer "weinermobile", Herbie the Love(travel)Bug, several father/son entries competeing against one another , and even a motorized unicycle!
Special thanks needs to be extended first, to egnix who out of the goodness of his heart (and a free entry!) created and maintains the program that tracks all of our participants throughout their journeys during this race providing the statistics and race positions and secondly to JungleHair who constantly updates the position maps making it so easy for everyone to watch their racers. GREAT JOB FOLKS!
